Today, I wish to reflect on the loss of imagery associated with music. The prompt comes while watching the documentary "Squaring the Circle." It's the story of the album art design studio Hipgnosis, which created some of the most iconic album covers of all time. It started in the 1960's, when the mismatched partners Aubrey “Po” Powell and Storm Thorgerson found themselves as emerging pioneers in the world of album art, including cover jackets and "inner sleeves" that protected the vinyl discs.Commentary comes through megastars such as Paul McCartney (Wings), Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) and Roger Waters (Pink Floyd). Hipgnosis created iconic photo art for the power bands of the era. The stories leading to the creation and production of images, is extensive.Watching the documentary was enjoyable, but I also felt loss. From a time when album art prompted imagination, association with the artists, and overall engagement in the experience. Sure, we were existing in a time when media exposure was limited. Pre internet, radio prompted interest, then the album brought the music and imagery through art. And I wonder...would it be possible to bring back similar art, as part of our marketing and promotions strategies? I feel as a society, we have forgotten the role music and musicians play in our lives. Social media has relegated music to a 30 second backing track meant only to help add levity or drama to a TikTok or IG/FB reel. What’s missing is the importance music plays in helping people heal. Helping people laugh. Bringing people together. The bond that people share when they sit down to listen to their favorite artist together. What’s missing is the humanity of music. Art should never be minimalised because at its core it is the realization of the human emotion. It is joy and sadness, love and hope, anger and despair, manifesting both sonically and visually. When we lose the connection to art we lose the connection to what makes us uniquely human. That tangible thing we just can’t quite put our finger on but it is there. Engulfing us every day. And maybe that’s the problem? Art has been tossed in the background because we are surrounded by it. Maybe if art disappeared we would actually appreciate it again? I can’t imagine a world without artists doing what they love because, well…they love it. They don’t do it for the fame. They don’t do it for the money. They do it because it’s in their DNA. Artists are born they aren’t created. Next time you see a painting or hear a song, or any artistic endeavor, take an extra moment to appreciate what went into creating it. I am happy to share Black Clouds with you all!This one marks the final chapter of concert visuals for Tiansen's second album. I am already looking forward to combining music and art again.I love visual storytelling. This one might even double as a lyrics video. What are your thoughts on "carving" the lyrics into the cliff?This project was a last-minute endeavor that had to be delivered quickly. I began by listening to the track with the lyrics on my screen and a pen and paper at hand—yes, I'm one of those...It was inevitable that I would create some black clouds, right? It is the song. But it started to feel like a battle between sunshine and rain as if someone from the brighter side of emotions wanted to reach out to someone in the depths. Then, this line struck me:"Cold and barren like on MarsLoneliness surrounds the airAt the edge of a cliffWondering how deep is the fall."WOW! That was the turning point when my vision crystallized.I immediately sketched a cliff where I divided one side into a sunny scene and the other into a rainy one. So, the two compositions alternate to the rhythm of the music using a mask. Finally, I added a silhouette as well.You can view the final result here.It was designed for a concert LED screen, so it doesn't need to be as detailed as it is. Most likely, not everyone noticed the "small silhouette" – probably only those close to the stage – but it adds depth to the atmosphere. The popularity of vinyl reminds us that analog and digital coexist comfortably amid ongoing hype over VR and the metaverse. Record album covers continue to endure as a cross-channel expression of a musician’s art, arguably even better than they did in analog age. In the pre-digital days of yore, album covers flourished in record stores and perhaps on billboards and merchandise depending on how popular a musician was. But now, album cover art creates a visual touchstone that carries over on websites, social media, and everywhere else a fan and artist find each other. Artists can re-interpret themselves with multiple versions of the same cover (as Olivia Rodrigo did with “GUTS” and Lana Del Rey with “Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd.”) and drop album cover art as its own event in advance of the actual album. In 2023, the most memorable album covers were compelling expressions of the human condition. Kara Jackson pierces the viewer with her observant gaze, hinting at the heart-rending melancholia that suffuses the music inside her debut album “Why Does the Earth Give Us People to Love?” Olivia Rodrigo’s coy expression speaks of the confident self-assurance of an artist coming into her own on her sophom*ore album. The striking cover of Caroline Polachek’s “Desire, I Want to Turn into You” focuses on her powerful, ravenous gaze as she crawls on the floor of a subway. At a time when the emergence of generative AI is reshaping the landscape of entertainment, 2023’s most memorable covers collectively assert that although AI can do many things, art is a distinct expression of the human soul. Band Punctuation Showdown: A Bon Iver SpecialI recently noticed that Justin Vernon, aka Bon Iver, likes a comma. In fact, all of his albums contain a comma in their official titles. But how well is this punctuation used? Let’s take a look. For Emma, Forever Ago = The debut album features a classic parenthetical comma in its title, with “Forever Ago” additional information introduced after “For Emma”. Without it, we could be left with the implication that “Forever Ago” is a restrictive modifier, perhaps denoting an Emma from the distant past compared to another more contemporary Emma.So, while the title of this album is a little elliptical, I feel happy enough to endorse its punctuation. 10/10Bon Iver, Bon Iver = Often thought of as a (comma-less) self-titled album, this sophom*ore effort is officially titled “Bon Iver, Bon Iver”.As a mark of separation, the comma does a fine job here, although I am a little unsure of the intention behind the repetition. To me, it makes it sound like someone is repeating the band’s name in a gently chiding manner, as if quietly amused at something Justin Vernon has said.Still, can’t hold that against the comma itself. 7/1022, A Million = By album three we’re getting into choppier territory.On the surface, the comma in this title seems to imply a numerical sequence, albeit either a) quite an unusual one that advances by 999,978 in a single step; or b) one that suggests an impatient counter.Apparently, this is not the case. According to an article in Dazed, the “22” in the title represents Justin Vernon (it being his favourite number), while the million represents “the rest of the world”. So I guess this is just another mark of separation, even if one used more abstractly. 5/10i,i = Ummm… I didn’t find an explanation of this one. But a lyrical theme on the album (according to GQ magazine) is the “dismissal of ego in favor of collaboration and community”. So perhaps the double “i” represents a coming together of individuals? Maybe you can even justify the lack of a space after the comma as denoting the closeness towards which Vernon was striving?If that is the idea, though, it feels strange to have picked a mark of separation in the first place. Surely something like “i+i” would have been more appropriate? Although I suppose then people might have pronounced that “I and I”, which could have made it sound like a Bob Marley cover album.Potential reggae implications aside, though, this is an at-best-confusing use of the comma. 3/10 There we go! Given the trajectory, I look forward to seeing what innovative method of comma abuse Mr Vernon pioneers for his next album.
