Catalog of the macromarine algae of the Gulf of Paria and Orinoco Delta, Venezuela

It is presented the checklist of the marine algae of the region of the Gulf of Paria and Orinoco Delta based on collections carried out in the region and revisions of works published in the area as well as revisions of databases of collections deposited in herbaria. The final listing of marine algae for the region presents a total of 160 species up to now, with distribution of the richness of 35 Chlorophyta, 25 Phaeophyceae and 100 species of Rhodophyta. The present work contributes seven new registrations to the ficofloristic catalogue of the Gulf of Paria: Phyllodictyon anastomosans, Dictyota mestrualis, Hypnea valentiae, Hypneocolax stellaris, Plocamium brasiliense, Ceramium cimbricum and Bryocladia cuspidata. The species for the Atlantic region of the Orinoco Delta are presented for the first time in this work and they are represented by three species: Chaetomorpha crassa, Bostrychia moritziana and B. radicans. In spite of the brackish characteristics of the waters of the region of the delta of the Orinoco, the presence of rocky sectors in the coast and of roots of Rhizophora mangrove they favor the macroalgae establishment. The area of the Gulf of Paria and Orinoco Delta represents an ecological site with a high diversity of species of marine macroalgae.

Dispersión del alga exótica Kappaphycus alvarezii (Gigartinales: Rhodophyta) en la región nororiental de Venezuela

Jorge Barrios
The carrageenophytic alga Kappaphycus alvarezii (Gigartinales, Rhodophyta) was introduced in the northeastern Venezuela for commercial cultivation in 1996. Farmed samples were collected at Ensenada de Guaranache, in the Araya Peninsula, state of Sucre, in July, 1999, and on the Island of Coche, state of Nueva Esparta, in may and december, 2000. Nonfarmed samples drifting off at several shores were also collected for study. The samples thus collected were preserved in 5% formalin. Field research and histological studies were carried out and the organisms associated to the alga were identified. The samples displayed vegetative tissues borne on a crust of small cells radially arranged and a large-cell central medulla with rhizoidal filaments. No reproductive structures were seen. With a few exceptions, no epibiont species were observed, and the algae did not betray obvious grazing marks. The lack of limiting structures to prevent the dispersal of thalli when K. alvarezii is farmed in open waters constitutes a risk factor that may favor algal dissemination onto the surrounding environment. The high growth rate of K. alvarezii, its capacity to reproduce itself by fragmentation, and its resistance to colonization by fouling organisms and grazing make it a potential invader upon introduction into new environments

A benthic marine macroalgae study from north of Macanao Peninsula, Margarita’s Island was carried out. The samples were collected between January to June 2007 between the localities of El Saco and Boca de Pozo. The phycofloristic catalog consisting by 73 macroalgae species and the red algae was the group of mayor richness. The species Bryopsis ramulosa y Hincksia onslowensis are new report from Venezuela and the species Cladophora prolifera, Dictyota friabilis, Herposiphonia tenella, Neosiphonia sphaerocarpa, Neosiphonia howei, Sahlingia subintegra and Taenioma perpusillum are new report from Nueva Esparta state. The north littoral of Macanao Peninsula in east-west direction shows a decrease gradient of temperature in contrast with de high values of salinity. The most diversity ambients in a phycofloristic sense was characterized by not consolidated rocky littorals, cold waters, high level of oxygen and soft surge. The rocky littorals of north of Macanao Peninsula shows in a phycofl...
