Where is Navy Basic training located? ›

Enlisted recruits head off to Boot Camp at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center north of Chicago, Illinois, near the western shore of Lake Michigan. While it's called Boot Camp, it's really a huge campus that includes both classroom and lots of hands-on training. The training is rigorous and demanding.

Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, Naval Station Great Lakes is home to the U.S. Navy's only boot camp. NAVSTA Great Lakes is also home to 19 of the Navy's technical service schools. Since its founding in 1911, the Naval Station has prepared men and women for duty in Naval service.

The Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Commission concluded only one training facility—Great Lakes—would continue to transform recruits into sailors. The other two would be closed. Recruit Training Command Great Lakes was subsequently rebuilt into a modern facility using the savings from the other two base shutdowns.

Tours for groups consisting of fewer than 15 persons or greater than 60 persons will not be routinely given unless approved by the Commanding Officer, Naval Station Great Lakes. Tours will not be given on weekends unless approved by Commanding Officer, Naval Station Great Lakes.

Will I Be Paid in Boot Camp? Yes, your pay starts the day you get to boot camp. Newly enlisted Sailors start out at the E-1 pay grade, but there are exceptions. You may also be eligible for additional bonuses and allowances.

Training is physically, emotionally and academically challenging, but you'll graduate as a stronger version of yourself. Navy Officers, including Physicians, Chaplains and Nurses do not go to boot camp; instead they may go to Officer Development School (ODS) or Officer Training School (OCS).
